22nd Annual Teddy Bear - Results and Photos
Eric and Pat Sjogren have been rallying for many, many years now with MCNJ and wrote last year’s Teddy Bear Rallye. Peter Schneider once again entrusted Eric and Pat as Rallymasters for the 22nd running of this charity event for the Marine Corp’s Toys for Tots program, and was also their Rallye Advisor.

As in past years, contestants started from the Subaru 46 dealership in Mount Olive and ended at the Long Valley Brew Pub. Twenty-six cars participated and followed written instructions and looked out for photo clues (which helped the traps self-correct). As with all Teddy Bear Rallyes, traps were kept simple and stuck to the MCNJ generals. One trap in particular during Leg 4 caught all but two cars, which maxed out their legs at 500 points. Instructions took the rallyists on a pretty drive through the numerous farms, hills, narrow roads, ponds, streams and one-lane bridges of Lebanon and Tewksbury Townships in Hunterdon County. Scores ranged 167 to 1800, but everyone enjoyed the day and their ride in the countryside.

The real winners were to children that received all of the generous toys donated to the USMC “Toys For Tots” program. We look forward to seeing you next December for the 23rd running of this event!

For those who would like to know how they did…

We hope you enjoyed scenic Lebanon and Tewksbury townships.  You passed many farms.  The different legs of the rallye were named after farms that you would have seen only if you were on-course.  It did not impact mileage.

Leg 1 – From Instruction # 1 to Instruction # 10 - Official mileage:  11.35 miles

Instruction 5 stated R on Pleasant Grove Rd.  The sign at the intersection says PLEASANTGROVE RD which is one word, not two words as listed in the instruction, so therefore you should not have turned right at this intersection.  You should have stayed straight, where you would have passed the scene in Photo A on your right near the fire station.  You then would have come up to the intersection for Instruction 6 which has the SOL Our Lady of the Mountain church, where you would have made a right.  Those who turned R on Pleasant Grove Rd encountered the sign in Photo B and skipped to Instruction 9.  Eventually, everyone makes a left on Califon Rd and joins together. Penalty:  143 mileage points (under mileage)

Leg 2 – From Instruction # 11 to Instruction # 16 Official mileage:  8.06 miles

Instruction 12 directed you L onto Anthony Rd, which is the second route-following priority.  Once directed onto a road by name or number, you are to stay onto this road until you can execute the next numbered instruction.  For Teddy Bear rallyes, you were told that special photo instructions should be considered and executed as if they were a numbered instruction; therefore you were looking for signs to keep you onto Anthony Rd as well as the SOL scene in Photo C.  At the intersection right before the SOL scene in Photo C, Anthony Rd becomes Hollow Rd and is marked such (Anthony Rd continues straight as possible towards the fire house).  If you beared right on Hollow Rd, you would have encountered the SOL scene in Photo C right away, made a R FOPP on Mt Top Rd, drove down the mountain and then skipped to Instruction 15, and joined the others on Musconetcong Rd to eventually turn R at the checkpoint and drive back up the mountain on Point Mountain Rd. Penalty:  204 mileage points (under mileage)

Leg 3 – From Instruction # 17 to Instruction # 21 - Official mileage:  7.23 miles

In Instruction 19 you encountered the “Speed Limit 40” sign depicted in Photo D immediately upon turning L on to Woodglen Rd, which you may have missed if you were reading all of Instruction 19.  The first “Speed Limit 40” sign is clearly bent up on the bottom and different than the next two “Speed Limit 40” signs.  You should have made a     L FOPP on Little Brook Rd, then R at STOP on Sliker Road and proceeded to go S at STOP at the intersection where the SOL Peapack-Gladstone Bank is on the corner.  If you did not turn L FOPP, you would have proceeded directly to the in-sight Passage Control signs, where you were given instructions on how to get back on course.  Everyone then joins together on Sliker Road and goes to the checkpoint across from the Califon General Store. Penalty:  110 mileage points (over mileage), plus stopping at an off-course Passage Control (200 points)

Leg 4 – From Instruction # 22 to Instruction # 31 - Official mileage:  15.05 miles

Instruction 25 directed you to turn R onto “SAWMILL RD” (which also reads SAW MILL RD at the intersection; however this was not the trap based on spelling).  Anything in the route instructions that appears in capitals and is enclosed in quotation marks is a direct reference to a sign.   As you can not turn onto a sign, you should have passed Sawmill Rd and continued straight on Old Turnpike Rd (Route 517) until you came upon the sign in Photo E, made a R FOPP onto Hill & Dale Rd and then skipped to Instruction 26 which brought you up Hell Mountain.  You would have eventually come down the mountain and made a L on Sawmill Rd at Instruction 29 and joined up with everyone at Instruction 30.  If you turned R onto Sawmill Rd, you would have encountered the SOL sign in Photo F, BL at Y to avoid Burrell Rd (where the old Tewksbury Vineyard used to be), skipped to Instruction 30 and joined up with everyone. - Penalty:  592 mileage points (under mileage)

Leg 5 – From Instruction # 32 to Instruction # 36 - Official mileage:  3.35 miles

Instruction 32 had you turn L onto Califon-Cokesbury Rd.  This trap was recently used in the 2010 Teddy Bear Rallye.  For those of you who ran that rallye, or are familiar with the area, or are using GPS or detailed county maps (which you are not supposed to per the instructions), you would know that Califon-Cokesbury Rd makes a right at the top of the hill.  The sign at the top of the hill for Califon-Cokesbury Rd has been gone for well over a year now.  The second route following priority states that once directed onto a road by name or number, the signs indicating that road may be found on the right, left or in front.  As there is no street sign, you should have stayed straight, which is the third route-following priority, where you would have encountered the scene in Photo G, made a R at T, then        L FOPP on Rockaway Rd, then skipped to Instruction 36 to go to the checkpoint.  If you made a right at the top of the hill because you thought that kept you onto Califon-Cokesbury Rd, you would have eventually turned on Rockaway Rd from the other direction and joined up with everyone on Rockaway Road. Penalty:  186 mileage points (over mileage)

Leg 6 – From Instruction # 37 to Instruction # 41 - Official mileage:  5.42 miles

Photo H is of the sign that you would have seen if you were going over the bridge from the other direction (which you were not).   However, if you thought Photo H was the one you actually saw, then you went down to the 4-way intersection and made a L on Potterstown Road, where you would have eventually made a R at STOP on Route 517 South.  Otherwise, you should have gone straight as possible until you also made a R at STOP on Route 517 South, and joined up with everyone to go S at SIG under Route 78 (there are multiple SIGs, but only this one qualifies). Penalty:  115 mileage points (over mileage)

Leg 7 – From Instruction # 42 to Instruction # 50 - Official mileage:  8.27 miles

Instruction 48 had you make a L FOPP after “40 M.P.H.”  The first road after that sign is Cold Brook Rd which clearly becomes unpaved within sight.  As defined by the generals, the course is on through, paved, public roads.  Roads other than these do not exist, unless the factor that makes them nonexistent is specifically overridden in the route instructions.  You were not directed to turn onto unpaved, or that Cold Brook Rd TTU.  You should have not turned there, but gone down Lamington Road a bit further and made a L on Black River Rd.  Either way, you would have eventually made a L on Vliettown Rd, and joined up together to go to the checkpoint at the STOP in Oldwick. Penalty:  221 mileage points (under mileage)

Leg 8 – From Instruction # 51 to Instruction # 53 - Official mileage:  8.91 miles

This is the official odometer leg.  There were no "planned" traps in this leg.

TOTAL OFFICIAL MILEAGE:  67.64miles

Please remember you were only competing against teams within your own “Class,” and the "honor" of being 1st Overall.  So, if everyone in your “Class” fell for the same trap, it would not affect your “Class” standings.  We used different traps throughout the rallye, to test everyone’s skills.  Rallying is a skill gained through participation and learning at rallye reviews.

The real winners of today’s event are the recipients of the toys that were donated for the USMC "TOYS FOR TOTS" program.  We hope you enjoyed the event and look forward to seeing you next December for the running of the 23rd Teddy Bear Rallye!  Thank you!

Sixteen cars participated in the latest AAUW/MCNJ road rallye, and departed from the McDonald’s in Byram Twp. starting at noon.  By 1 pm, the heavens opened up with a major thunderstorm, but most of the teams persevered to the end point, Chun Bo restaurant in Newton.

Leg #1 consisted of two course-following traps.  The first was an instruction to go L 3rd OPP; the trap was that the first OPP was at a T, in which all teams turned left since they were “onto” Rt. 613, but failed to recognize the turn as the first OPP.  The second trap was an EITHER/OR.  Both options had teams turn right; the second part of each option determined which option to execute, based on which one was first executable.

Leg #2’s first trap was that Inst.’s 14 and 13 were switched.  Teams had to execute Inst. 13 first, then 14.  This was followed by a “straight-as-possible” trap off Rt. 94.

In Leg #3, there was another “straight-as-possible” trap at Old Statesville Quarry Rd.  Brian Beckmann was waiting at a manned checkpoint to direct the on course teams how to tie in with the off course teams.  Those teams who did not see Brian incurred a 200 point penalty. Later in the leg, teams turned at Fox Hill Rd, the instruction stating “TTU”.  However, the paved road returned shortly.  At the next intersection, teams had to turn left at Roy Rd to keep from travelling upon another section of unpaved road.  Teams who continued straight were off course.

The first trap in Leg #4 was an instruction to turn L at T.  Three teams correctly realized that the road to the right quickly ended, hence that this first left was not at a proper intersection.  Shortly thereafter, all teams found Lynn Beckmann at another manned checkpoint, a very wet and rainy one!  By determining which instruction teams were attempting to execute, another 200 point penalty was received by the off course teams.  Later on in Leg#4 was an “onto” trap, in which Neilson Rd. made a turn to the right, which the teams would have had to follow to stay on course.

Immediately after CHECKPOINT #4 came another trap.  This one revolved around the fact that the instruction PU is not completed until an identifying sign is passed.  Teams off course turned prematurely at Berry Rd, while those on course had another opportunity to do so about .6 miles down the road.  The other trap in Leg #5 was another “onto” trap, but a trickier one because there were two other parts to the instruction that put them “onto” Dalrymple Rd.  However, Dalrymple Rd appeared before the action of the next numbered instruction, and those teams who failed to turn there were off course.

All that was left then was the mileage leg, which carried grateful and hungry teams south to Newton and Chun Bo restaurant.  A final end trap asked teams to turn left into the parking lot of the restaurant.  Those who chose to turn left on Merriam Ave, and right into the parking lot were given another 200 points.  Turns out the winners of the rallye chose this path;  however, they had done so well on the rest of the rallye that the 200 point did not keep them out of first place overall.  Congratulations, Mike and Pepi Brooks!
